The Roleplay of MTC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This ruleset is an editted form of the Chessienet.com notes.
Helpful Hints:
Certain rules of conduct are expected in any public interaction. If speaking in public and being out of character is absolutely necessary, then please preface your speech with [brackets] so others around you realize you’re speaking outside of your character’s context.
Staying in Character:
MTCers will not break character. The only exception is the rare occurrence of needing to clear up a misunderstanding. If you enter the villa as a ghost to eavesdrop you may hear a few speaking out of character. This is our right and choice within the privacy of our own HQ.
We Haven’t Been Introduced:
As far as your character is concerned, "allnames" doesn’t exist. Use it to identify people, as it was meant to be, but don’t assume you know someone’s name unless you’ve been introduced.
Strive Towards Realism:
UO doesn’t lend itself easily to role-playing realism, however many things can be done to add to the experience. For example, mining on an island of ice and snow is perfectly reasonable, however mining naked on an island of ice and snow is just asking for frostbite.
Common Sense:
Use your best judgment when interacting with other members of the UO community. Stay in character, and follow the rules, and use your common sense to increase your role-playing experience. Your effort will add to atmosphere of the game for everyone.
What’s a Stat?:
I’m a mage of some renown, I’m a Grandmaster warrior, I’m quite strong. I absolutely DO NOT have an 84 Magery, a 100 Tactics, and a 70 Strength. Get the idea? There are however clever ways around this sometimes. The most clever way I have seen so far is, "Tell me friend on a scale of 1-100 how would you rank your magery talents?" That was suave if you ask me.
Your Reputation Precedes You:
Your actions are not dictated by your notoriety, your notoriety is dictated by your actions. In short red does not mean he is a PK and to be killed on sight. A few roleplayers are red, mostly because some blue role-player changed his mind when he died in combat.
Armor & Weapons:
A rule of thumb for any battle or skirmish is "don't take or wear anything you can't stand to lose".
Rules of Engagement
What is the purpose of these rules?
To provide a set of guidelines so that "at war" status and "orange highlighting" are not abused by role-players. To assist in enhancing the role-play experience on UO without detracting from the experience. In the end you determine what you and others will get out of the whole experience.
Who are these rules for?
Anyone who highlights ORANGE is required to follow the Rules of Engagement unless prior rules modifications have been made for the scenarion or roleplay regarding their interactions with MTC.
Looting NO LOOTING. Looting will not be tolerated.
Death:
The newly resurrected when returning to his corpse is to be considered still dead in a role-play context. This person should remain in death robe, gather his things, leave the area without talking, and not participate in that battle any further.
Verbal Warnings:
Though not always necessary, a verbal warning should be given prior to any combat, and the consciousness of the character being warned must be established (i.e. do not attack logged out characters or those that are "afk" or lagging).
Forced Combat:
Players should not be forced to engage in player vs. player combat. If the victim refuses player vs. player combat, the aggressor may chose a reasonable alternative, possible examples include (but are not limited to):
(a) demanding reasonable tribute or ransom from the victim
(b) taking the victim prisoner
(c) forcing the victim to leave the area (this takes role-playing etiquette on the other's part)
Do not by any circumstances mouth off to the other player if you do not wish to fight. Simply say I do not seek combat with you this eve.
Ceasing Combat A participant in combat may try to end the combat by emoting "*CEASE*":
If he/she notices that there is a strong real potential for third party looting, OR
If one of the participants received aid from a BLUE player.
Note that due to game dynamics, sometimes combat may not end (lost connections, lag, spam-reduction code, etc.)
This request may or may not be honored by the winning side. Though it most likely will be granted if time permits; do not expect it. Combat is often chaotic and not every word noticed. Players that repeatedly use cease when losing may soon not have it honored especially when given the chance to not be involved in the combat.
Neutral Ground:
NPC towns, public buildings, and any other areas that might be agreed upon by the "warring" guilds. In a neutral area, physical interaction may still occur, but in the form of emotes. For example, *GreyPawn kicks Grishnak* or *Azalin flicks Aleph*. The intent would not be to do damage, but to act in-character. If the situation calls for it, a suggestion to "step outside" could be made, where actual combat would take place on non-neutral ground. Should the combat start outside neutral ground and you flee to neutral ground, you may be followed and killed.
Murder Counts There is absolutely no excuse for any role-player to report another role-player. No murder counts against non-warred people should be given in any role-playing combat, even if it's borderline. Current game mechanics make murder counts very dangerous to have. If there is any question as to motive, give the benefit of the doubt and clarify later. This guideline does not hold if a pattern of unacceptable combat develops.
By the same token, if you are given a murder count, please do not exacerbate the problem by looting the person who gave the count. If anything, returning his items while asking why you were given the count will do more to establish trust and understanding for future situations. If an agreement is not arrived at between the two involved then the blue will be asked to not participate. Should this blue continue to interrupt his name will be flagged by MTC and sent to all other guilds. This requires the participation of other guilds as well.
NPKs:
The best way to prevent going gray in a battle during an event is for the parties involved to be on guild stones and at "war" with one another. Remember that this function is also used to "ally". No player that highlights orange should ever be considered "KOS" unless agreed between the two guilds for an event or quest. Red is also not to be considered "KOS".
Disruptive Players or PKs PKs in the classic sense, those that simply kill to ruin others enjoyment. The way to handle groups like this (especially thieves) is to simply ignore them. If things become too intolerable, all are encouraged to dispatch them or gather in another place. If in the middle of a RP battle and PK's arrive the battle is to be stopped. Please try to let everyone know of the PK's arrival.
Definition of RP Use of "thee" and "thou" is not what determines RP. Any player that is respectful toward others and reacts to events as his/her character would, is in effect, role-playing.
Non-guilded or blue Participants.....including blue healers Those that are not directly involved in specific quests are still somewhat problematic. We do not wish to exclude bystanders but nor can we always risk going red. If they seem to make genuine efforts, let things slide, if not, take the necessary precautions. The MTC stance on "blue healers" is to attack them and chase them off if possible. Should this healer return he will most likely be killed or if the one receiving the heal does not call off the healer then MTC will leave. It is very important that the one receiving the benefit of the blue healer call him off. The blue healer will not listen to the one not receiving the healing.
Complaints/Issues:
In the event that a dispute arises, please do not go to the message boards to resolve it. Talk with the individuals involved, and their guild masters, privately. Rarely can the whole situation be described in adequate detail on a board --- the only thing generated by such posts is more confusion, anger and hurt feelings.
Anyone that has a complaint or an issue with how an event has transpired, an individual or guild's actions, or any other concern, should not drop out of character in game and make an scene. Swearing, etc. only makes things worse. You can ICQ, or discuss it in IRC with the guildmasters of the guilds. Keep OOC stuff to OOC methods of communication. Entire conversations conducted in brackets will not be tolerated.
Know the Facts Lack of communication is the single largest cause of problems in any situation. Whether someone has been looted or insulted, or an event is in progress, it is best to know the whole picture before "taking vengeance", getting involved in a battle or posting messages on the boards.
Combat in Off-limits Areas Absolutely NO fighting to take place within a Rune Library or Tavern. Additionally, steer clear of provoking battle anywhere near a bank. If battle begins outside of one of those areas, a spillover into the "neutral" territory can occur. In short don't start a fight and flee into town, die with honor or recall away.
UO is a Game! Always keep that in mind. Respect others and do not force your play style on anyone.
Stealing/Theft Theft is very seldom tolerated and when it is items of extreme value that would take more than a reasonable effort to replace are not to be stolen. Examples are magic items and keys.
NOTE:
Any Rules of Engagement, whether permanent or temporary, agreed upon by two guild masters will take precedence over these rules as long as those two guilds do not violate the Rules of Engagement with other guilds.
Violations of the Rules of Engagement are to be handled by the guild stone guild masters of those involved. If a resolution can not be reached immediately, "peace" may be declared on the guild stone until a resolution that is satisfactory to both sides, and arrangements to avoid future such situations, have been decided upon.
The GA/TWP Meditators may be called upon to assist in any disputes between warring guilds when they are unable to resolve the issues themselves.
