Lee sat her desk in her bedroom. An array of books and papers were strewn about her desk. She wasn’t looking at them. Instead, she was unconsciously twirling her quill in her hand.
Where is she? She thought to herself. It must be close to midnight by now.
She worried about Rhiannon. Despite the despicable things Rhiannon had done to both Lee and Daz, Lee still felt responsible for Rhiannon. She still cared for the girl, and a sense of obligation remained. Rhiannon’s parents had saved Lee’s life one dreadful eve. After their passing, a violent end to their life, Lee had taken Rhiannon in at the request of the parent’s. As she was in their debt and she had great feelings for them, she had looked after the girl as though she were her own child. A human child…but a child none-the-less. Nearly 12 years had passed since then. The relationship between Lee and Rhiannon was strong. The first nine years they had developed a bond that Lee believed would last forever. Then, things had gone terribly awry. Rhiannon had become angry…malicious… Lee did not know why.
Now, she had returned and Lee saw the old Rhiannon. The sweet, yet frisky, girl that she had loved so much seemed to have returned. (Daz, however, was not giving his trust to Rhiannon as easily as Lee had done). Lee’s old protective feelings had also returned. Rhiannon could certainly take care of herself, but she had been taken advantage of before. She was such a flirty girl! Lee worried about Rhiannon wandering around town after dark with no chaperone, but she was an adult now – 22 years old.
Lee sighed. I must let her be. I have to trust her decisions…she is a grown woman.
Lee heard the door open downstairs. Lee rushed down the teleporter and found Rhiannon fumbling through the living room. She appeared a bit tipsy.
Rhiannon. Lee said calmly.
Lee, I didn’t see you th... Rhiannon dropped her bag and laughed a little wildly. There… I didn’t see you - there. She pointed to Lee and giggled.
Rhiannon, have you been drinking?
Just a wee bit… Rhiannon held up her hand and brought her index finger close to her thumb. Her hand was unsteady, as was her balance. She giggled again.
Have you been drinking alone or have you made drinking pals already?
I made a friend! I wouldn’t call him a drinking pal…But he sure is cute!
Lee rolled her eyes. And his name is…
Sir Patrick! Rhiannon stated firmly. And he is a very nice man! He made me laugh too! He is very likable!
Yes, I know Patrick, and he is a nice man. Lee arched an eyebrow. She thought and realized she did not know how Patrick conducted himself around young women…frisky young women. He was honorable in other parts of his life and she could only assume, and hope, that he would conduct himself in the same manner around Rhiannon.
Rhiannon interrupted Lee’s thoughts. I did not run into Lord Fong though. I was so disappointed. Rhiannon plopped her bag on the table and pouted slightly. Patrick did tell me a little about Fong…I so wish to run into Fong again.
Rhiannon skipped drunkenly across the room and lay down on the elven couch. He is so very handsome… Rhiannon drifted quickly to sleep, smiling and leaving Lee to her thoughts.
Lee pulled a blanket from the closet and tucked it gently over Rhiannon’s body. Lee went back upstairs with troubled thoughts. She sat down at her desk and began twirling her quill again. Her thoughts began to race. I hope this little crush she has on Fong passes. It should. After all, she has only met him once – and that was a brief meeting…He is too old for her. Lee nodded firmly at this final thought. Besides, he is such a busy man – I doubt he has had time to give her a second thought.
Her thoughts continued. All of the council members seem honorable…but Rhiannon is an attractive, young woman – and men are – after all – men. Lee brought her hands to her head and gently massaged her temples. I don’t even want to think about men who are not in the council… Her head began to throb and she decided to turn in for the evening.
